"Paint Our Town Blue" initiative grows, balloon release held

(04/15/14) - In just the last few weeks, there have been at least two, high profile cases in Flint involving children and potentially, child abuse.

Both were mentioned at an event, Tuesday, which was held to spread awareness about an initiative called "Paint Our Town Blue."

April is National Child Abuse Prevention month. Blue is the color associated with the cause. Click HERE for more information on the initiative.

"Last year, in Genesee County, we had six children, under the age of two, that died tragically from abuse and neglect," said Kevin Roach, president and CEO of Whaley Children's Center. "There were 35 other children who were critically injured to the point where their lives will forever be changed."

People you may recognize have pledged their involvement - Mateen Cleaves, Genesee County's sheriff and prosecutor, as well as Congressman Dan Kildee.

Every person stressed they are working to help make our community safer for children.

There were reminders that there still is a lot of work to be done.

"This past weekend, twins not yet a year old, arrived at Hurley," said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. "One had, according to a police report I reviewed, swelling to the right side of the head. It was determined the baby had a skull fracture. The other child had a skull injury and a brain bleed, according to the report. Undoubtedly, you'll be hearing more about this very sad case."

Community members are invited to get involved with the "Paint Our Town Blue" initiative by wearing blue Friday, April 25. A candlelight vigil will also be held that night in remembrance of the children who have lost their lives as a result of abuse and neglect.
