(04/18/14) - It's a Mid-Michigan tradition that's now in it's twenty-fifth year. Catholic Charities of Genesee and Shiawassee Counties is preparing for its Easter Sunday Celebration.
"We're very pumped up. Every year we do this, and it gets better and better," said John Manse, of Catholic Charities.
Volunteers spent Friday morning putting finishing touches on hundreds of Easter baskets that will be given away to kids. Afternoon dinners will be held at both the North End and Holy Angels soup kitchens in Flint.
"Most of the time, you think of the poor and the homeless, but there are a lot of lonely people and individuals that just don't have a place to go. We want to be able to help anybody that wants to come in," Manse said.
The Easter Sunday giveaway doesn't end with these baskets for kids; Catholic Charities plans to send adults home with something as well.
"A lot of people forget about the adults and seniors, so we're going to give them all a bag of food and personal hygiene products to take home too," Manse said.
As for the dinner itself, "We're going to have a pie bar, a desert bar, salad bar, we're going to have ham, and everything that traditionally that most people will have for Easter," Manse said.
A lot of the food will be provided by Genesee County area Bob Evans restaurants. They're still accepting donations through their Be Kind Initiative.
"The four Bob Evans restaurant locations have raised over $1,500 to donate. We'll be making that food in our stores on Saturday, delivering on Sunday. We're just really excited to be part of this," said Justin Shultz, general manager, Bob Evans.
Volunteers are still needed to help serve food for about four hours on Sunday. Manse believes their efforts will go a long way in making the holiday a happy one for people in need.
"It really does make it great for these families, and helps put a little normalcy in their lives," Manse said.
Easter Dinners are free and begin at around 1 p.m. Sunday. For more information on volunteer opportunities, click HERE.
