"Prepared is Protected" initiative starts, first 24 volunteers trained

(04/18/14) - Emergencies pop up, and unfortunately, not all of us know what to do.

Volunteers, in the Flint area, are being trained to help prepare people for emergencies.

The idea behind this initiative, they're calling it "Prepared is Protected," is to have dozens and dozens of people ready to spread the word and valuable information.

The city of Flint and the Genesee-Lapeer Chapter of the American Red Cross partnered and trained the first 24 people Friday.

Clarence Campbell, who has made it his mission to clean up Flint, was one of them.

He found himself in the middle of a big mess this winter after the ice storm around Christmas.

"I wasn't prepared," Campbell said. "I was out of electricity for several days."

"I don't know what would I have done had I not had power for six days, but I'm learning today," said Essence Wilson, another volunteer.

The goal is to have them pass that information along to more than 1,200 homes in the Flint area. They will be able to conduct educational workshops and one-on-one sessions.

"How to create an emergency kit, how to make an exit plan and where to go for more information," said Mary ZumBrunnen, Flint's Chief Service Officer.

"For seven days, for the entire week, we had a shelter here at this facility," said Tony Lasher, executive director of the Genesee-Lapeer Chapter of the American Red Cross. "We assisted 200 people that needed emergency shelter."

It's a service many may not have even known was available.

"Fires, tornadoes, floods, ice storm, it gives them a very robust look at how to prepare their family and prepare their homes," Lasher said.
