Names release in plane crash in Shiawassee County kills two men

SHIAWASSEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (04/20/14) - A plane crashed in Shiawassee County Saturday afternoon, around 2 p.m., killing two people.

The plane went down in a field on M-13 and Potter Road. That is just near the Genesee County border.

The Shiawassee County sheriff says two men died in the crash, Richard Kenneth Hayward, a 63 year old from Vassar and Mark James Kozan, a 49 year old from Caro.

According to online records, the two seat single, engine aircraft, is known as a CJ-6A, which was originally used by the Chinese Air Force to train pilots. These types of planes are popular with collectors and hobbyists. The plane is registered to Hayward's Aviation in Vassar, Tuscola County.

ABC12 spoke with Francis Osika, a farmer who was working in the field across the road. He says the plane sounded like it had engine trouble, although this is not confirmed with investigators. Eye witnesses say the propeller was turning slowly when the plane made several sharp turns. It then lowered its landing gear before crashing nose first into the field.

Motorcyclist Lucas Lentner stopped to help as the farmer also ran over to the crash.

Together, they fought to save the two men in the plane, but their injuries where too severe.

The Shiawassee police and the FAA, Federal Aviation Administration, are investigating the crash.
