SHIAWASSEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (04/20/14) - Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a plane to crash, killing two Mid-Michigan men.

It happened around 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Shiawassee County. The plane went down in a field on M-13 and Potter Road.

The Sheriff says 63-year-old Richard Hayward from Vassar and 49-year-old Mark Kozan from Caro died in this crash.

Richard leaves behind a big family - his wife, five kids, three step-children, 13 grand kids and one great granddaughter. Plus, another granddaughter and a great grandson, both due within the next three weeks.

We spoke with his daughter Susan on the phone - they're holding onto each other while they grieve.

"We're trying to take comfort knowing he died doing what he loved," Susan Hayward-Doran said.

Susan says her father had many hobbies, but flying was a passion.

"His dream plane was always to have his Nanchang CJ-6,” she said. “That was the plane he was flying yesterday.”

She remembers flying with her dad and sharing the skies together.

“He loved showing us the things he loved to do,” she said.
