Taxpayers still owe millions after Buena Vista Township school districts dissolves

Posted: Updated:
BUENA VISTA TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (04/21/14) - The school district has been closed for nearly a year, but taxpayers in Buena Vista Township are still on the hook for millions owed to the state.

The state of Michigan confirms it needs to collect more than $6 million for the remainder of a millage that was passed in 2005.

Buena Vista could ask for a new millage to pay off a debt, but that would be a hard sell to voters.

Township manager Dexter Mitchell says he has been hearing from angry residents, but he says the township, a separate entity, can do little in regards to money owed by the now dissolved district.
