Thieves stealing truck, trailer, equipment from Burton business caught on security cameras

Posted: Updated:
BURTON (WJRT) - (04/22/14) - The owner of Atlas Outdoor in Burton is hoping you can help find thousands of dollars in stolen equipment.

"Somebody knows somebody that knows something," owner Sam Gembel said. "And our hope is that by that, the word will get out."

Early Tuesday morning, thieves stole a truck and a trailer full of expensive equipment.

Tally up the damage they caused - and everything they stole - it cost the business about $100,000.

The thieves were caught on their security cameras.

"The stomach wrenching one was watching the truck actually drive by the surveillance camera," Gembel said while watching the footage. "It's just like ugh, you work your butt off for something. They made off with four brand spankin' new Exmark Zero Turn mowers they were about $12,000 a piece."

Gembel said the thieves pushed a pool ladder up against the fence, cut the barbed wire and hopped into the yard.

Once they were inside, he said they pushed trucks out of the way to get to the one they wanted to steal.

Once everything was loaded up - they hit the road - and headed for Detroit.

When police found the truck, it was burned so badly you can barely recognize it. And everything they stole was gone.

"They're probably going to end up on Craigslist and somebody will hopefully be red flagged," Gembel said.

Spring time is Atlas Outdoor's money-making season, ut they're not letting this get them down.

"We're thankful for all that we do have," Gembel said. "Can't cry over some stolen lawnmowers I guess."

Gembel has insurance, but it will take time to kick in. Right now, his competitors are pitching in and donating equipment.

See the image in the story for a list of serial numbers on the stolen equipment.
