Saginaw County begins mosquito spraying program

SAGINAW COUNTY (WJRT) - (04/23/14) - The buzz of airplanes over some Mid-Michigan homes this week could help keep away the annoying buzz of mosquitoes later this spring.

Saginaw County started its mosquito spraying program on Wednesday.

Six planes are flying around Saginaw County and parts of Gratiot County - about 45,000 acres of land.

The planes are loaded with natural soil bacteria called BTI, which kills mosquito larvae, but we're told it is not dangerous to any other organisms.

The pilots will focus on woodlands mosquito breeding habitats throughout the county, near populated areas.

It's important to note that what crews are doing will only help control spring mosquitos and will have no effect on the summer mosquito population.

The spring mosquito control is expected to last 5-8 days, depending on the weather.
