Burton GM facility plays major role in ignition switch recall replacements

Posted: Updated:
BURTON (WJRT) - (04/23/14) -While GM deals with their massive recall of cars with defective ignition switches, employees in Mid-Michigan are a key part in that process.

GM Customer Care and Aftersales center on Davison Road in Burton is busy making sure dealerships have everything they need.

This recall is tied to at least 13 known deaths. Once the replacement parts arrive in Burton, they end up in affected cars all around the U.S.

"Our customers are our priority," said Gail Lewis, the Superintendent of Operations at the center. "We want to make sure they feel safe."

"As soon as it comes in we immediately switch everything that we're doing to focus on this part to make sure that we get it out in timely manner," she said.

They package up the replacement ignition switch parts and send them on their way.

"There's absolutely a sense of urgency for these ignition switches," said General Supervisor Naycie Linn. "As soon as parts come into our facility we're receiving them, we're processing and shipping them out the door as soon as possible."

They'll end up in dealerships across the country - including Al Serra Chevrolet in Grand Blanc - where they're doing the actual replacement.

"The customers that have picked up their vehicles after repair are very happy to get their vehicle back and feel a piece of mind their vehicle was repaired correctly," said Paul Householder, Fixed Operations Director at Al Serra.

GM mailed letters last week to about 1.4 million owners of 2003 - 2007 models, telling them to contact a dealer to make an appointment for repairs. Owners of 2008 - 2011 models subject to the recall will receive a letter in early May confirming they are included in the recall.
