Same clothes help tie same man to three, unarmed robberies

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (04/25/14) - Three robberies on two different days - and police say one man is responsible.

How are they so sure?

Investigators say he wore the same clothes for all three crimes and probably used the same SUV in at least two of them, too.

A surveillance camera was rolling when the Walgreens on Ballenger Highway, in Flint, was robbed around 3:30 a.m., Friday, April 18.

Michigan State Police Trooper Jeffery Rodgers quickly put out pictures pulled from the video and detailed the outfit he was wearing, including a shirt which had an American flag prominently on it. The images were also posted on the Flint Police Department's Facebook page.

Not even 24 hours later, Rodgers confirmed he was in custody.

Now we know what happened.

Twelve hours after that Flint Walgreens was hit, a Dollar Tree, on Pierson Road, in Mt. Morris Township was too.

Mt. Morris Township Lieutenant Matt Lasky says the robber grabbed cash from the register and took off in a silver SUV.

Officers found the SUV stuck, in mud, in a field nearby.

Footprints helped lead them to a man and woman, covered in mud, walking in the area. Both were arrested. Lasky says the woman has since been released.

Investigators were able to connect that man to the Dollar Tree robbery and say the clothes he was wearing matched what the Walgreens guy had on, including that unmistakable American flag shirt.

And there's more.

Rodgers says the same person is suspected in the same kind of crime at the Rite Aid on Ballenger Highway, in the city, April 8.

Once again, the same outfit, including that same shirt, came up in the suspect description and the SUV too.

Twenty-six-year-old Thomas Walton has been charged with three counts of unarmed robbery.

Police say Walton is currently on parole for an unarmed robbery back in 2006 in Genesee County.

Investigators think he may have been involved in other, similar crimes.
