BURTON (WJRT) -
(04/24/14) - Burton police are keeping the memory of three fellow officers alive by awarding scholarships to students in their names.

Burton police officers Karl Liebengood, Russell Herrick and Terry Thompson were all killed in the line of duty.

A scholarship was set up in their names.

The scholarships were handed out, Friday, to three students - and it was a surprise.

Scholarship finalists Taylor Weier, Mackenzie Ford and Laura Wilkinson showed up at the Burton Police Department on Friday, thinking they were going to interview for a scholarship.

But, they weren't. They had already been selected.

The Burton police wanted to surprise the students.

After the shock wore off, the students were grateful and planning how to spend their $2,500 scholarship at college.

The students were selected not only because of their academics, but also because they gave back to their communities.
