Family of fallen sailor starts nonprofit, putting together care packages for troops

MIDLAND (WJRT) - (04/27/14) - Nearly three years after a Midland sailor was killed in action, his family is honoring their hometown hero by making life a little better for current military men and women.

At only 20 years old, Navy Corpsman Aaron Ullom of Midland died in Afghanistan in 2011 while saving someone else's life.

Through their grief, his parents found a way to keep his selfless attitude alive.

On Sunday, they packed up nearly 200 care packages to send to the Army National Guard's Midland-based 1460th Transportation Company.

"He would be so proud of us," said Debi Ullom, Aaron's mother.

Most of the boxes go to men and women serving overseas who might not otherwise receive a care package.

"They couldn't believe that an organization would send someone they don't even know a care package, it meant so much to them," Debi said.

Aaron's Gifts From Home started in his parents' basement. Now they're a certified non-profit, working in a donated spare room at Coldwell Banker in Midland. They put together care packages every month - and it keeps getting bigger.

"I'm writing them each a little message so they know who it came from," said Lori Upleger, while packing up a few boxes.

Upleger knows the worry of a military mom all too well. She has two sons currently serving, and she's sending their buddies a few boxes.

At the end of the day it comes down to making these heroes smile. Aaron's dad knows what he'd say if he could see this right now.

"Send me a box!" Kevin Ullom said with a smile.

If you want to get involved by donating some items or if you know someone who could use a care package, contact the nonprofit through their Facebook page.
