MIDLAND (WJRT) - (04/28/14) - It's officially orange-barrel season in Mid-Michigan.

In Midland, work got underway Monday morning on a major round-about project, not too far from the Dow Diamond.

It's along the M-20, US-10 business route at the Patrick Road cross-over, just east of Washington Street.

M-DOT is investing more than $1 million into this project.

They say roundabouts have been proven to be safer than traditional intersections. Not everyone agrees.

"I think it's an unnecessary waste of taxpayer money. The roundabout is going to slow that intersection down," said Jacob Howard, who lives in Midland.

While the city of Midland is preparing for its first round-about, some are concerned that it could cause more damage than good.

"They make sense in a lot of places, but mostly where vehicles have to come to a stop anyway and right through there the vehicles don't really have to come to a stop. Typically they drive right through without stopping so I like roundabouts, but I think that's a terrible location for one," Howard said.

Anita Richardson with MDOT disagrees. She says an MDOT study over the course of a three year period concludes that there have been 20 accidents there.

That's why she believes a roundabout is necessary.

The project is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes.

"It eliminates left turns so you only turn right within a roundabout. It's again a proven safety device because it is going to allow traffic to flow more smoothly at the intersection and reduce the number of T-bone crashes in the area," Richardson said.

"My personal opinion would be as long as it reduces crashes and it makes safer roadways, then I'm all for it," said Arthur Boisine, who lives in Midland.

This project is expected to be completed by July.

It will create traffic delays, but detours are posted.
