SVSU student killed in I-75 crash Saturday night

Posted: Updated:
BAY COUNTY (WJRT) - (04/29/14) - The Bay County Sheriff's Department says 21-year-old Derrick Ammons of Saginaw Township was killed while trying to cross a busy highway.

The sheriff's department says Ammons, an Saginaw Valley State University student, hit the median with his car on northbound I-75, between M-84 and Amelith Road, in Frankenlust Township.

The accident happened just before 11 p.m. Saturday.

Investigators say after the accident, Ammons started to walk along I-75 and eventually tried to cross the highway.

That's when he was hit. Investigators aren't sure if Ammons was hit by one car or two.

The sheriff's department says it's too early to know what caused the original crash, or why the man tried to cross the road.

Ammons was studying criminal justice at SVSU.
