UAW endorses Mark Schauer for governor during Flint visit

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (04/29/14) - One of the men in the running to be Michigan's next governor is gaining major support.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer was in Flint, Tuesday, to pick up a big endorsement from the United Auto Workers or UAW. Members and retirees gathered at UAW Region 1C to make it official.

"Mark fought hard for the loans that helped save GM and Chrysler and give them a chance to develop new technologies to build the new cars and trucks of the future right here in the state of Michigan," says Norwood Jewell, Region 1C Director.

Schauer, a former state lawmaker and member of congress, pledged to do away with what he says is the "right to work for less" and says education and middle class jobs are a priority.

Schauer says his opponent Gov. Rick Snyder's initiatives aren't working for most communities and most families.

Gov. Snyder has taken heat for for supporting legislation taxing pensions and making Michigan a "Right to Work" state.

"I'm committed to continuing to support good manufacturing jobs, the auto industry and policies that help us build an economy that works for everyone," Schauer said. "People see deep cuts to our public schools, tax increases on retirees and families and low wage earners, all to get a big, corporate tax break, aren't working for most communities and most families."

Schauer had the same message at a second stop, at a get out the vote rally, on Flint's north side at the Cathedral of Faith Church.

"Flint is undergoing a lot of changes at the hand of Gov. Snyder and they're not good," says Pastor Chris Martin. "I wanted people in the African American community to know who Mark Schauer is, the fact that we need to get out and make sure we hear his economic plan, hear his educational plan and his plan on crime."
