New owners for vacant Silver Parkway car lot in Fenton

FENTON (WJRT) - (04/29/14) - A large car dealer is moving into Genesee County. LaFontaine Automotive Group - which owns twenty dealerships - has purchased property in Fenton. LaFontaine built its base of operations in Oakland County, but the company now owns the former Joseph Pontiac dealership on Silver Parkway. They plan to re-open it within 60 days as a large used car center.

"We're in the expansion mode a little bit. That's the reason we purchased this property. We're anxious to get into Genesee County," said Michael LaFontaine, president of LaFontaine Automotive Group.

LaFontaine is well known in Metro Detroit, but this is the company's first venture into Mid-Michigan. Up to 300 used cars will be located on the 10 acre site.

"Our game plan is to get them all certified with warranties and so on, so consumers will be protected," LaFontaine said.

LaFontaine has also been beefing up its roster of new car dealerships, and that means it will have more used cars available.

"I think we're up to $18 million in used car inventory, so it's a big sector in our company," said Ryan LaFontaine.

"So to bring them to a central location that you can display say 200 to 300 cars at one time makes a lot of viable sense," Michael said.

It's possible a new car line could also be added in Fenton, but no names are being mentioned publicly.

"We've had some who have approached us that say, 'hey, we'd like to be here,'" Michael said.

About 10 sales people will be needed under the new owners.

"We are growing the sales staff. But we're also looking at service, we're looking at technicians for some of the work. We're also looking at detailing.

For a short time, Suski Used Cars was located at this site. Joe Hood, who currently operates Uncle Joe's Used Cars in a small building on the property, will be relocating by June 1.
