Hemlock Schools prepares to start early middle college

Posted: Updated:
HEMLOCK (WJRT) - (04/30/14) - At a time when college costs are soaring, high school students in Hemlock will soon have the opportunity to earn credits before they graduate and even end up having their first year of school paid for.

Delta College is partnering with Hemlock Public Schools to start an early middle college program.

Students who participate won't graduate with their class, because it's a five year program, but many still think it's worth it.

"It would be kind of different because I like that whole thing, graduating with my peers, but I could stay another year," said Harleigh Bell, a ninth grader at Hemlock High School.

Bell learned about the early middle college program a few weeks ago through her guidance counselor.

"It sounds amazing, just getting a head start in life. I really like the idea," she said.

Students will be given the opportunity to extend their high school experience to a fifth year.

That means they'll get an early start at earning college credits and could even earn an associates degree.

"It's an opportunity for our students and for our families to access college at no cost to them to get experience and to get ahead and get a leg up in the college credits and tuition," said Don Killingbeck, superintendent of Hemlock Public Schools.

The early middle college will provide dual enrollment opportunities during a student's junior and senior year on the high school campus.

During their fifth year, it would involve a math course as well as college courses on campus at Delta College.

"I think it's a good opportunity for students right now and in the future to give them a little experience," said Ryan Bray, a ninth grader at the high school.

Besides an associates degree, students would also graduate with a high school diploma at the end of the program.

The district is hosting an informational meeting on May 5 at 7 p.m. at the high school, where they can receive applications.

The deadline to sign up is May 23.

Students attending high school elsewhere can also apply for Hemlock Early Middle College as a school of choice student.
