Weight loss miracle pill: is it right for you?

(05/01/14) - She says she did not do anything, like dieting or exercising. She only took the capsules, "'cause it said, just do your normal thing so you can see if you get the results," she said.

All of that, and the price was right, "All you paid was for shipping. So, that's all that it cost me," she said.

Lorrie Patterson Thomas has since switched to something else,  because taking the Garcinia Cambogia-coffee bean combo following her plan would cost $160 a month. "It's outrageous," she said.

And remember, while the company recommended three Garcinia capsules a day, Lorrie took only one a day.     

For Nikki Williams-Shultz, the issue of cost never became a factor, because it never had a chance to. "Yeah, I started it. I only lasted five days on it," she said.

There were two issues. While, Garcinia Cambogia it is not supposed to be an appetite suppressant, Nikki says she did not expect it to make her want to eat more. "My first couple of days, actually my appetite increased. I was starving." 

That, Nikki says, was not what forced her to stop taking the pills. "Two days in, I started to get a little bit of lower stomach pain, like a stabbing type pain," she said.

After five days, the pain became unbearable. Nikki stopped taking the Garcinia Cambogia. "And I quit taking it and two days later, no pain."

If you search Garcinia Cambogia on the Internet, you will likely find mixed reviews, people either can't seem to stomach it,  or they love it.

"This is yet again, a magic bullet and every couple of years there is a new one that everyone gets excited about," says Genesy Athletic Club dietician, Christina Schumann, MPH, RD. She says, the problem is, the scientific jury is still out. "Some of the studies in test tubes in animals seem to be a bit more positive. But you don't find that many studies where this was recreated in humans. Of the studies in humans that did generate weight loss, it was a small amount. It was not statistically significant. And they were also short studies - 12 weeks or less."

Ultimately, Schumann says, successful weight loss still goes back to the old stand-by's: eating right and exercising.

If you do decide to try Garcinia Cambogia, bear in mind, dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA.  And before trying any supplement- talk to your doctor.
