Members of Congress are trying to come up with a plan to deal with the influx of unaccompanied children who have traveled thousands of miles - turning themselves in to U.S. authorities to escape from desperate situations in countries like El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. WASHINGTON, D.C. (WJRT) -

There is serious girl power happening in the United States Senate right now and it could lead straight to the White House.

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) is making it clear: she wants former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to lead the nation.

“People are so excited and so enthused. We’re chomping at the bit to get involved to support her,” Stabenow said.

Stabenow said the Democratic women of the Senate support Clinton, not just because she is a woman, but because they think she is the best candidate, with serious qualifications.

“It’s not some novelty to have a woman running for the highest office in the land,” Stabenow said. “Somebody who is smart and tenacious and tough is a woman.”

Stabenow said the 20 women in the Senate get together every month, where they talk politics and also chat about their families and children—something that brings them closer together

“Sometimes just to share fun crazy things that happen to us and other times, have serious discussions, so we work together, we respect each other, we have come a long way,” Stabenow said.

Democrat or Republican, Stabenow said she would not be surprised if some of her Republican colleagues quietly plan to vote for Clinton too.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if, once folks get into the voting booth, particularly the Senate Republican women that we might see a few folks that are voting for her.”

Of course, Hillary Clinton has yet to announce whether or not she will even run for president.
