Mid-Michigan hero Travis Mills visits Saginaw

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW (WJRT) - (05/01/14) - He's Mid-Michigan's very own hero. Vassar native Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills survived an IED explosion in Afghanistan, but lost portions of his arms and legs.

Now he's a walking and talking inspiration - and he made a stop in Saginaw to share his story.

Mills was here to speak at a Covenant Healthcare stroke awareness event. He's never had a stroke - but his amazing story of recovery is universal to anyone going through a tough time.

"We're all in our own different journey in life, mine is about getting better, walking and talking and just being a regular person in society," Mills said.

And that's the message Mills wanted everyone to go home with - he's missing parts of his arms and both legs, but he's a person, just like you and me.

In April 2012, Mills was serving his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. That's when his life changed forever.

"I have my little girl, the last thing I said before I got knocked out on the medication to put me to sleep on the operating table, 'my little girl, am I ever going to see her again?'"

And he did. Today, he walks, drives his truck and even snowboards. His support system has made all the difference.

Elizabeth Reimers of Saginaw came out to hear him speak - she loves that Travis is so upbeat and positive when it would be so easy to be down in the dumps.

Mills said it's all about knowing what motivates you and just pushing on.

"I have a wife and a family I know where my motivation and my direction lies, so strap it up and go, let's just get wild and have a good time," Mills said.

A documentary was made about him, called 'Travis: A Soldier's Story."
