Fenton fifth graders ask community to support bond proposal

Posted: Updated:
FENTON (WJRT) - (05/02/14) - Some local elementary students are putting a call out to voters.

The Fenton Area Public School District is asking the community to support a bond proposal next Tuesday.

Fifth graders from State Elementary want to make sure everyone knows how important the request is, so they called a news conference.

The students are speaking out in support of a proposal that could improve their futures.

"It's really important for it to pass. Our whole district needs it, not just our school," said fifth grader Taylor Farrell.

These 11 year olds sat down in front of the media. The group called the news conference on their own to spread a message.

"To inform people about the May 6 bond," Taylor said.

"I want them to know our cause and help us out," said fifth grader Joseph Pierce.

"I knew that if you guys came, a lot of people would see us on TV and become aware," Taylor said.

It's a new experience for the young students, for an issue they say puts a lot on the line.

"Never been on the news," Joseph said.

If voters approve the proposal, administrators say taxes will not go up and the district would be able to make important improvements.

"We need new computers and schools security, we are going to get some security cameras, and the buses are falling apart, we need some new ones, they are breaking down all the time," Joseph said.

Technology enhancements are the reason these students are pushing so hard.

"It's really necessary, our technology is really lacking," Joseph said.

"The technology that we have now is very bad for research that we do," Taylor said.

They're hoping their plea, their ambition and their engagement will send voters to the polls.

"Help, help, help," Joseph said.
