Blue Ribbon committee holds workshops to better Flint

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (05/03/14) - The Blue Ribbon committee revealed itself Saturday morning after working behind the scenes for some time.

The committee held a workshop for the general public in efforts to hear their input about how the city operates, including how the mayor is elected and his responsibilities in office.

The committee will work as a middle man between the public and the city's emergency manager, Darnell Earley.

Two options were proposed at Saturday's workshop. One was for the city to have a mayor who was appointed by City Council members. The mayor would, in this option, be involved with policy but not management. The second option given is what the committee calls hybrid. The option allows for a mayor elected through popular vote who is involved in policy but not in management. The hybrid option allows for a city manager.

Saturday was the first of three scheduled workshops. The committee is already looking into adding a fourth.

Residents who attended the workshop say they wish there was a higher turnout. They hope more people will get involved, and more workshops will be held.

"This is a very, very critical time as the city looks like it's planning a transition back to local control and to have what quantifies to six hours of public input, is no way sufficient enough," said Pastor Latelle Holmes, Greater Baptist Church.

The scheduled workshop times are below:

Saturday, May 10
10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Mott Community College Event Center
1401 E. Court St.

Thursday, May 15
6 - 8 p.m.
Insight of Neurosurgeon and Neuroscience
4800 S. Saginaw St.
