FLINT (WJRT) - (05/04/14) - Supporters of Flint Community Schools raced to the finish Sunday, all to raise money for local students.

For the second straight year, runners and walkers pounded the pavement at The Flintstone Challenge.

Last year, like many college students on the brink of graduation, MSU medical student Luda Khait was busy planning on how to payback her debts. The only difference, it wasn't her students loans. Inspired by the community she spent her residency in, Khait organized the first annual Flintstone Challenge 5k that would benefit The Flint Community Schools Classroom Support Fund.

"We go through the three different hospitals as third and fourth year medical students. You know, we see a lot of different people that come through the hospital. For them to allow us to come in and be a part of their healthcare, teaches us so much. This medical school is where you get the majority of your learning and this is just a way to say thank you," Khait said.

"It goes right to the students, right into education and we know what a strong education base can give to students and the chances it can give them later," said Brian Tesler, chair of this year's race.

For the second straight year, walkers and runners hit the pavement for the cause.

Probably the most popular face in attendance, besides Sparty, was MSU linebacker and Goodrich native, Kyler Elsworth.

"My mother's a teacher, my girlfriend's a teacher, so I know the struggles. The money in classrooms and what the schools are going through right now. I see it firsthand and as soon as they called me, I was honored to be asked and come do this. And it's great to give back," Elsworth said.

For the past 30 years, the fund alone contributed more than $300,000 into the Flint School System. Last year, $12,500 came from The Flintstone Challenge.

"The kids of Flint today are going to be the future leaders and giving them an education and giving them what they deserve, is going to bring the city back to where it's supposed to be," Khait said.
