Local pastor under investigation for claims of inappropriate touching

GRAND BLANC (WJRT) - (05/04/14) - A pastor is under fire as the Catholic Diocese investigates claims that he inappropriately touched two children.

The Catholic Diocese of Lansing said Father Ken Coughlin of the Holy Family in Grand Blanc denies these claims, but because of state law, an investigation was launched. An official statement from the Catholic Diocese of Lansing was released Sunday. You can read it HERE.

"That allegation involved two students and the touching of hands and legs," said Michael Diebold, with the Diocese of Lansing.

Diebold said
as soon as they learned of that accusation, they contacted Child Protective Services, and they are investigating.

The statement says the school, the parish, and the diocese are fully cooperating with the investigation. While the investigation is underway, Father Coughlin will be on administrative leave.

Father Coughlin's online bio says he's been with Holy Family Church and School since June 2007. Since then, families have called him a religious leader and a friend.

"He's been to our home, he's had dinner with us and our children, we trust Father Ken
," said Parishioner Lori Drzewieck, who learned what happened when the church made an announcement at Sunday morning mass.

"We'll respect the process. And we will support whatever that outcome is. And we believe whole heartedly in Father Ken, and in the Catholic Church. We will stand by that. We know that's another hit to the Catholic Church and we will stand by the process," Drzewieck said.

"There's two sides to every story, and we're anxious to hear both sides, but in our heart, we think a great deal of Father Ken
," she said.

ABC12 will continue to follow this investigation and post any updates as we learn more.
