Meeting held Monday to discuss investigation of Grand Blanc pastor

Posted: Updated:
GRAND BLANC (WJRT) - (05/05/14) - A pastor at Holy Family Catholic Church is being accused of inappropriately touching students.

Grand Blanc Police are investigating and the Holy Family community is waiting to hear both sides of the story.

They held a meeting Monday to discuss it.

"They (the parish) were certainly taken by surprise by the announcement over this weekend about their pastor," said Michael Diebold, with the Diocese of Lansing.

The meeting is for the Holy Family parish only. The Catholic Diocese of Lansing say it's a chance for parishioners to have a frank discussion about the investigation.

Media are not invited inside. They don't want to hinder this open conversation.

We first found out about the investigation, Sunday, when the Diocese of Lansing posted a statement on their website.

They tell us Father Ken Coughlin is being accused of inappropriately touching two students on the hands and legs. A letter on the Holy Family website says he's being accused of touching school children at an assembly last week.

The Diocese informed Child Protective Services of the claims. They sent it to Grand Blanc Police. Police confirm they are investigating.

Father Coughlin is on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

Attorney Frank Manley is representing him. He says Father Coughlin denies doing anything wrong.

He gave us the following statement:

"Protection of children is paramount to Father Coughlin. The Catholic Church has set up new procedures to deal with these types of situations. We are cooperating and look forward to uncovering the facts. We ask that people not rush to judgment based on cases having nothing to do with Father Coughlin, to keep an open mind. At the end of the process we expect Father Coughlin to be vindicated."
