Volunteers needed for makeover of Flint's University Corridor

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (05/06/14) - Saturday morning, 12 buildings along Flint's University Corridor will receive quite the makeover.

"This is well over a $100,000 project that Benjamin Moore has stepped up with repairs, materials and paint and everything, and I think this is just awesome for Flint," said Wes Benning, contractor.

It's the end result of this portion of Flint being named a winner in the Benjamin Moore Paint What Matters Contest - a victory made possible last summer through online votes. University Avenue was one of only 20 main streets selected across the nation. Contractors will handle the heavy lifting, but volunteers are being recruited as well.

"We need more than 100 people to come out, meet at Kettering University, Chevrolet and University. We're going to be cleaning up curbs, brush, the boulevards," said Flint Mayor Dayne Walling.

Mayor Walling plans to get his hands dirty Saturday morning, in what he describes as a 'fight against blight.'

"I'm going to be out here, rolling up my sleeves, going to work with everybody else. I want to be a part of this change and it's finally here," he said.

One of the biggest focal points at Saturday's painting party will be on the building that has become known as the Spencer Art House.

"A former mortuary, an historic property, we've got a great plan to make this look like a real jewel along the University Corridor," Walling said.

Some of the painting and repairs are currently underway, with Kettering University students leading the charge.

Jack Stock, Kettering University's external affairs director, believes the improvements are already making students feel safer on and around campus.

"That's what we want to encourage. Through these type of things, we're getting students and community members out on the street. They feel it, they see it, they sense it, and it's a great thing," he said.

A post-painting celebration will be held in University Square Park from 2-5 p.m. Saturday.
