High school students celebrate College Decision Day

BAY CITY (WJRT) - (05/06/14) - High school seniors are being recognized and honored in Michigan and across the the country this week.

Decision Day is meant to celebrate and recognize all seniors on their way to college. The hope is that younger students will get motivated about that journey, too.

"Sadly, in this world, we can't get very far without college," said Brenda Konkle, high school senior.

Instead, there's a lot of excitement as the seniors prepare for life after graduation from Bay City Central High School.

In a gym packed with senior classmates, their names are called one by one.
College Decision Day gives the Class of 2014 a chance to learn where everyone is headed after high school.
"I will be going to Alma College, I will be moving in 109 days and I picked that school because they have a fantastic CPA program, it's a five year program that you fit in about four years," Konkle said. "After High School, I'm joining the United States Marine Corps and the reason that I decided that is because I had opportunities to play college football and my heart wasn't in it and I didn't know what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to help people so I decided to join the Marine Corp."

Adding to the college excitement and anticipation in Bay City was MSU's Sparty mascot.
Asia Beard, college adviser, is using this day to encourage students to get pumped about their education.

"We don't celebrate kids going off into post secondary institutions as much as we should and this gives the kids that's been working hard all school year a chance to actually celebrate where they're going in the fall," she said.

"I think this is cool because we get to recognize our peers and what they're doing. I mean, you just kind of hear in the hallway, 'well I think I'm going to go here' and 'I think I'm going to go there,' this is we really get to sit down and celebrate our friends achievements," Konkle said.

The principal says nearly 175 students out of 290 at Bay City Central are preparing for their post-secondary institution.
