Miller Road construction affecting some local businesses

Posted: Updated:
FLINT TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (05/06/14) - Construction season is underway in Mid-Michigan, and with it comes traffic snarls and headaches for drivers and local businesses, especially for one of Genesee County's busiest roads. It's a cycle that never seems to end. Mid-Michigan roads took an extra hard beating from Old Man Winter. Now that our weather has warmed up, road crews are back on the road trying repair the damage.

It's more than just dust and orange barrels that businesses along Miller Road in Flint Township have to deal with.

"We've been here since 1983, so we appreciate everybody's business. It's definitely hurting us. We definitely feel it," said Philip Bakousidis, from Valley Coney Island.

Those annual harbingers of construction season have sprouted between Linden and Dye Roads - and it probably couldn't come at a worse time. After a record cold winter, many businesses along this stretch of Miller depend on warmer weather to attract customers.

"We waited until the summer to do this, because that way we can come in and work as fast as possible," said Genesee County Road Commissioner John Daly.

$1.6 million is being spent to repair and resurface this quarter-mile stretch of road with a fresh coat of asphalt. That should smooth out what has been a rough ride, made worse by a brutal winter and prolonged by inadequate road funding.

A mid to late July completion might not come soon enough for businesses in the construction zone. Many have taken similar hits to the bottom line before.

"I remember back in 2000, Linden Road was closed down. It hurt us then. And now this is hurting us again," Bakousidis said.

But, not everyone is feeling the pinch, at least not yet. Thanks to access along Linden Road, salesman Buddy Cokley from Tile & Stone Express says customers are still coming in. "We've been pretty busy this past week. We definitely have a lot more cars driving through our parking lot because it narrowed down to one lane over there."

Hopefully, it will be just temperatures that heat up this summer and not tempers from motorists who have to deal with the labyrinth of constructions zones this season.
