Hundreds of Mid-Michigan bridges don't make the grade

Sagianw County - (05/06/14) - Hundreds of Mid-Michigan bridges don't make the grade, according to a new infrastructure report highlighting the bridges that are rated "structurally deficient" or "functionally obsolete".

Forty four percent of the 371 bridges Genesee County are in need of serious repair.

That's one of the worst in the state.

Saginaw County is on the list, too, with the stability of 32 percent of bridges in question.

Each bridge in the state is ranked on a scale from one to 10, one being the lowest.

ABC12 went to a bridge on Orr Road, which is ranked as one of the worst in Saginaw County. The bridge is ranked as the second worst bridge in Saginaw County, according to the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation association.

"It's so in bad condition and it needs to be repaired, some of the trucks won't even come down this road because it's so bad," said Karen Kenel, who lives in Saginaw County.

Dave Sobieski lives nearby. He says it can be a struggle to get across because of signs that put a limit on what can come through.

"It's a pain in the butt. We farm ground down here. You can't get nothing across it, we have two semis, we have four wheel drive tractors and you got to go around," he said.

Almost everyone is looking for a long term fix for Michigan's worn out bridges and roads because lawmakers say not fixing the bridges will end up costing the state more in the long run.

Those who live near the bridge in Saginaw County that's ranked one of the worst say they have one fear.

"Falling through it," Sobieski said.

Residents say when they see holes near the bridges, their biggest concern is that more will pop up, making it impossible for them them to drive near the bridges.
