Flint schools, unions reach tentative agreement

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (05/07/14) - Leaders from the Flint Community Schools and its unions announced a tentative deal that could save the district millions.

Interim superintendent Larry Watkins was surrounded by union leaders when he made the announcement inside the administration building.

That agreement could save the district $6.2 million. The district is facing a nearly $10 million deficit.

The district's chief negotiator says the teachers union could absorb the lion's share of the reductions, at $5.5 million. The rest will be spread out over the district's unions.

Wages will remain relatively uncut, with the biggest changes coming to health insurance plans, staffing and other areas.

So far, the district has closed schools, laid off staff and made other moves to close the gap.

The agreement still has to be ratified by union members for each union. That could happen next week.
