Owosso Township man to finish mule team trip

Posted: Updated:
OWOSSO TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (05/07/14) - A year ago, a Mid-Michigan man hooked two mules to a wagon and headed for Oklahoma. Before he arrived, he was involved in a horrible accident. Now he's preparing to finish the trip.

Charlie Peters of Owosso Township isn't one to give up easily. He was near his destination when his wagon was hit by a driver not paying attention. The crash killed his two mules.

Peters was on a special mission.

"My father's grave. I never have been to it and that's were I was headed," he said.

He also wanted to thank veterans for their service.

"The people were so great. They were so nice. I never met a bad person the whole way," Peters said.

In July, the wagon was rear-ended in Arkansas and the mules crushed.

"It knocked me out. Threw me about 40 feet," Peters said.

During medical examinations after the crash, it was found Peters had kidney cancer. He returned to Michigan to get treated. A few months ago, Peters bought two mules named Tom and Jerry.

"I'll pick up where I left off. I've only got 143 miles to go," he said.

The 69-year-old Peters is getting the mules in shape. In a couple of weeks, he'll put the wagon on a trailer and haul it down to Arkansas. He'll do the same thing with the mules and hopes to get the mule team underway around June 1.

"I have to finish this trip because I said I was going to finish the trip," he said.

Peter's wife will be with him this time, but he'll drop her off in Oklahoma and return to Owosso with his mule team.

"They love to pull. They love to go. When I start to get the harness out, they're up here ready to be harnessed up and out that gate," he said.

Peters thinks it will take him a week to 10 days to reach his father's grave. He has no set time when he wants to return to Michigan.
