New team to fight child abuse in Isabella County

ISABELLA COUNTY (WJRT) - (05/07/14) - There is a new team fighting child abuse in Isabella County. The goal is to help reduce the trauma young victims of the horrible crimes go through. It's called the Isabella County Multidisciplinary Team, and it's made up of prosecutors, law enforcement officials and child protective agencies.

Wednesday, members of that team signed a protocol agreement at Mt. Pleasant City Hall. The document symbolizes their commitment to work together during child abuse and sexual abuse cases. Their efforts are meant to help streamline the investigation process.

Before the agreement, a child involved in an incident might have to go through several interviews with different agencies and be re-traumatized by all the different investigations. This new approach is more child-focused, and geared to make them feel a little more comfortable in a traumatic situation.

"Child sexual abuse is devastating in its effects, and there is one in 10 children that are sexually abused by the age of 18. This problem is here, it's all across Michigan and all across the United States, so we are here to bring awareness to this tragic thing and make sure that everyone knows that to keep children safe it's going to take the community coming together," said Brooke Nettz, with the Child and Family Enrichment Council.
