Genesee County Commission votes to 'Ban the Box'

Posted: Updated:
GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) - (05/07/14) - "A box is a box, but that box does judge you for the rest of your life," said Lorene Randall.

That small, but powerful box is the box checked on resumes to tell whether an applicant was ever convicted of a crime.

The Genesee County Commission voted Wednesday to 'Ban the Box.'

Supporters of the ban say the box does not allow applicants the chance to explain their crime.

They feel checking the box without defending themselves limits their ability to get jobs. For example, when a young person is convicted of a crime, and is looking to turn their life around.

"They've paid their debt, now it's time for them to get back. If not, they can go back and commit another crime," said Omar Sims, Genesee County commissioner.

The box ban takes affect immediately.

County job applicants, who have been convicted of a crime, will still be subject to a background check.
