Homophobic slur spray painted on Clio area teen's home

Posted: Updated:
VIENNA TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (05/08/14) - A child should always feel safe in his or her home - but a Clio area mother says her son doesn't, after someone spray painted the words "die" and a homophobic slur outside his bedroom window.

Melanie Peabody said it happened after midnight, April 25.

They woke up to a noise, went outside and looked, but didn't see anything because it was dark.

"The next morning, our neighbors called and said we might want to check out the outside of our house," she said.

It was written in red and had an arrow pointing to her son's bedroom, Peabody said.

"I mean, somebody is saying "die," she said. "They want death upon my son and I'm not OK with that."

Peabody's son is 16 and a sophomore at Clio High School.

She said he's been bullied before.

"He wasn't the typical boy. He wanted to be on stage, singing and acting and we supported that. The kids picked on him."

Peabody said their Vienna Township home, right outside her son's bedroom, was also egged prior to the spray painting, but they didn't think much of it.

They couldn't let this go.

They called police and the school and put up cameras outside their home.

"Our thought was our safety was more important than anything. If it went from egging to spray painting. What was going to be the next step?"

Peabody and her family tried to clean off the horrible words, but you can still see the outline of them. She said there have been offers made to help paint over it, but she doesn't know when or if she should try doing that. She can't afford to replace the siding.

Peabody hopes somebody reports what they know to police.

A relative set up a Facebook page called "Letters for Levi" too, and the page says "show support to a teen that is being bullied and threatened."
