Memorial wall for fallen Saginaw police officers unveiled Friday

SAGINAW (WJRT) - (05/09/14) - Saginaw Police unveiled a new memorial, Friday, in honor of officers who lost their lives while on duty.

The department held a special ceremony to show the public why the memorial is special for the city.

It's all about paying tribute to the men who gave all they had, and the new memorial wall to honor them is very nice.

It's a somber reminder that police work is dangerous, and a vow to never forget.

"They lost their lives in the line of duty. They made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the community," said Oscar Lopez, of the Saginaw Police Department.

The eight faces on the memorial are of men who died while on duty. They bravely stepped in to help and protect others who were in trouble - and lost their lives in the process.

"Our fallen officers who paved the way before us," Lopez said.

The new memorial is the Saginaw Police Department's way of saying thank you. It replaces the old photos that hung from a brick wall.

"We just wanted to revitalize it. I think they deserve something a lot better and this is just for us to pay our respects and let them know that they are gone, but they'll never be forgotten," Lopez said.

Mari Hines is capturing pictures of the moment, focusing in on her brother, patrolman Gary McCullen, who was shot and killed in 1967.

"This memorial wall is just beautiful," she said. "Forty-seven years ago. He is the last officer killed in the line of duty and I hope that they don't ever add any more pictures on this wall."

She brought her family along to pay tribute.

Cheryl Scott Brown says she thinks about her father, Leon Scott, often. She lost him at a young age.

"When we were kids, he was answering a disturbance down on sixth street and the gentleman inside shot him and killed him," she said.

She's thankful to know that he, and his fellow officers, aren't taken for granted - and this wall will remind the community of how much they sacrificed.

Several agencies helped to pay for the new memorial. It was designed by an employee from Lowe's.
