Mid-Michigan motorists continue to steer around potholes

FLUSHING TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (05/09/14) - While the state legislature appears to be making progress in supplying more money for road repairs, motorists still have to steer around potholes.

We've all the seen paved roads that look like the surface of the moon - but it can happen on dirt roads, too.

There's about a mile stretch of Dillon Road in Flushing Township that is not in great shape, but neighbors tell us it was worse a few days ago.

One man's car got stuck as he drove up to his roadside mailbox.

"It was horrible, with just awful potholes, but then they came through, re-did it and made it even worse," said Michael Mulqueen, who lives on Dillon Road.

The Mulqueen's teenage son hit a pothole with a Volkswagen Beetle.

"He bottomed out, cracked the oil pan. What's that going to cost us now? About $450," Michael said.

"Every time I turn into the driveway, I fish tail," said Paula Mulqueen.

"It's worse than sliding on the ice because of the mud. You lose control, the treads get full of mud. It's the first time I ever seen them grade the roads and make them worse," Michael said.

Potholes continue to plague paved roads, too.

Deniese Borg's Chevy van has four flat tires and bent rims after hitting a crater on Jennings Road near Stanley.

"I thought the pothole was going to eat my car," he said.

Borg plans to file a claim with the Genesee County Road Commission.

"They said they would send me a form for the insurance. They don't really have to replace it. They'll see what the insurance company has to say about it," he said.

ABC12 spoke with Genesee County Road Commission director John Daly. He says if a car is damaged on a road and there are no other complaints in that area, chances are the claim will not be paid.
