Nearly 40 cats were found inside of a Flint home

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (05/09/14) - Nearly 40 cats were pulled from a home on Flint's west side.

Concerned neighbors described the smell as horrific, but the conditions inside the home were much worse than the smell.

"The interior of the home is just horrific, I can't even describe it," said Flint's blight coordinator Raul Garcia.

Garcia says situations like this are a growing problem in the city.

Even so, he says this discovery was one of the worst he's seen in 30 years.

The home on Stocker Avenue in Flint has become more of a health concern for neighbors.

"It was horrific, I didn't even want to walk past it going to work. It really is like strong when the wind's blowing," said Stephany Jackson, who lives nearby.

Jackson says the smell is so unbearable that she doesn't even like to let her children go near it.

"We moved in around December. When we would walk by there, you could smell like cat urine and stuff like that. I didn't know what was going on, I just thought it was something else in the neighborhood, I didn't know it was that house," she said.

It's believed that the woman who owned the home moved out at least six months ago.

Garcia says the woman was hoarding the cats. Neighbors told him she was returning there almost every other day to feed them.

"The interior was very depressant. There's feces over the furniture, over TV's throughout the entire floor. So you really couldn't walk throughout this property," Garcia said.

The cats were turned over to the Genesee County Humane Society and 37 were euthanized.

In the meantime, neighbors are shocked that so many animals were inside.

"I can't believe she did that, that's terrible. That home must be terrible inside," said Elmer Drury, a neighbor.

Garcia says that home needs to be condemned immediately. He also tells ABC12 that the woman could face a penalty.
