Gov. Snyder coming to Saginaw Monday morning to talk public safety

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW (WJRT) - (05/11/14) - Governor Snyder is making a stop in mid-Michigan Monday morning.

On his agenda - public safety.

He'll be in Saginaw with the head of the Michigan State Police. People in the city are already thinking about what they'd like to hear from the governor.

"Safety is a big issue," said city resident Sandra Wooten.

Here's the situation the city is in right now. Last year, budget cuts trimmed the police department down to 55 officers.

MSP stepped in with a few dozen troopers. It's part of an initiative - lead by the governor - to add more police to Saginaw, Flint, Detroit and Pontiac.

If you ask the governor said in his January Sate of the State address that crime is down 16 percent in Saginaw.

The police chief agrees - he's said violent crime is down, partly because they've put some major offenders behind bars.

"I really just feel like we need our own local people people who have vested interest in the area," said city councilwoman Brenda Moore, "not to say the state boys don't but I would love to see some more local policing."

Moore says she thinks MSP are doing a great job, she just want to see more city officers.

"When you bring in outsiders I think what you do with your local people is you start to make them wonder, is this going to be a takeover? And that's what I don't want to see happen," she said.

Wooten said it's great that MSP and city officers are working together, but she doesn't understand why the city decided to cut officers during their budget crunch instead of cutting in a different area.

Governor Snyder will be at the Christ Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
