Flint teachers approve proposed contract, still needs board approval

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (05/12/14) - A majority of unionized Flint school teachers are on board with concessions to help the district eliminate its budget deficit.

That from the President of the United Teachers of Flint.

During a vote held Monday, 60 percent of their 524 members came out to weigh in on the new contract proposal.

Of those who voted, we're told 97 percent said yes to the changes.

The union president says the alternative was a 19 percent salary cut, so for many, the choice was clear to instead pay more for the benefits they receive.

The board still needs to approve the contract.

The district is trying to fix a budget deficit of $10.4 million.

School leaders have already closed schools, cut jobs and slashed services.
