Habitat for Humanity reaches beyond housing in Flint

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (05/13/14) - Habitat for Humanity is making good on their commitment to neighborhood revitalization.

A national program was born, Tuesday, in Flint - and it's no coincidence it happened during small business week.

Habitat for Humanity is reaching beyond housing. When residents said they wanted more small businesses in their neighborhood, the organization listened.

The idea was born in Flint, and Genesse County is the first to try the program. The goal is to give what used to be a floral shop on West Court Street, a new purpose.

UM-Flint students worked with the Entrepreneur Society to come up with a business plan. It's a table-top hobby store, where non-traditional board games can bring young people together.

Volunteers will begin reframing some of the structure on Tuesday.

A partnership with Mastercard plays a big role. By 2015, several more habitat affiliates will be selected, and will come back to Flint to get some pointers.

After Tuesday, the real construction won't start until an approved plan has been presented to the city. The work should take about a year.
