Bay City Recreation Area campground water logged, some camp sites closed

BAY COUNTY (WJRT) - (05/15/14) - A Mid-Michigan campground is getting a soggy start to the season. About a third of the camp sites at the Bay City State Recreation Area are flooded.

But it takes more than a little rain and a few water-logged fire pits to scare off campers at the site, Thursday night.

"We've been camping before where we walked out of the camper and stepped in knee deep water," said Kelly Adams, who is here with her family from Jackson, Mich.

A few days ago, the sites were fairly dry. Now they look more like ponds.

"As of right now, we have 70 sites closed," said Park Ranger Brian Dunn.

Seventy out of 190 are closed as of Thursday night and the timing isn't good. Busy Memorial Day weekend is coming up. Last year, they had a big flood and two thirds of their sites were closed.

"We're watching it, we're hoping to be able to pump some of it out of the low lying areas, but we're going to keep monitoring it and as Memorial Day comes closer make the assessment," Dunn said.

But still, these early campers aren't phased one bit. Brain Adams is here with his wife Kelly, and he's been busy fishing.

He's looking on the bright side of the wet weather.

"I told my buddy last night, I said we can just throw the fish in the pond here and clean them in the morning, they'll still be swimming around," he said.

"It's camping, live with it."

Dunn says if you have a registered camp site and it's flooded, they're doing their best to help you out and give a refund if necessary.
