Jurors convict Kewon Harris in 2012 murder of 14-year-old Antonio Bell Jr. in Flint

FLINT (WJRT) - (05/16/14) - Jurors have convicted Kewon Harris in the June 2012 murder of 14-year-old Antonio Bell Jr.

Harris was 15 at the time of Bell's shooting death and charged as an adult.

He's 17 now and was found guilty of first-degree, premeditated murder and felony firearm.

Prosecutors intend to ask for life in prison without parole for him. It's not a guaranteed sentence because of recent rulings and a change in law tied to the way juveniles convicted of murder, like Harris was, are sentenced.

Bell was shot and killed at Mott Park. His family believes someone lured him there.

Investigators believe someone gave Harris the gun and he fired it, striking and killing Bell.

"He didn't deserve this so I know it was gonna (sic) work out in our favor," said Bell's mother, Cheryl Dobson. "I thank you, Lord. I thank you, Jesus."

This wasn't an easy case for police and prosecutors.

A misidentified co-defendant was charged and headed to trial. The case against him was eventually dismissed and another person, with the same first name, was charged.

Online court records show, in March, 17-year-old D'Angelo Johnson pleaded guilty to assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and carrying a concealed weapon.

Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Farah said, Friday, he's scheduled for sentencing, June 10.

Harris is set to be sentenced the same day, but that could get pushed back to hold a hearing about how he should be punished because of the juvenile lifer changes.

Police and prosecutors also had a lot of trouble with cooperation from witnesses.

"We had material witness warrants that had to be issued. We had to impeach our own witnesses in this case. We had witnesses change stories. We had witnesses disappear and we had witnesses intimidated," said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. "The fact that we were able to win despite that is really a great thing for the community."
