FRANKENMUTH (WJRT) - (05/18/14) - A former Michigan State Police trooper, who lost his son in the line of duty, will be laid to rest this week.

Paul T. Butterfield  lost his battle with cancer last week. He was 67.

He's the father of Trooper Paul Butterfield II, who was shot and killed last year on the west side of the state.

Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth is handling the elder Butterfield's services.

Visitation is Tuesday from 12-8 p.m. The funeral home is located at 590 N. Franklin Street.

Visitors are also welcome before the 11 a.m. Wednesday funeral at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1200 E. Genesee Street.

The elder Buttferfield worked for the MSP from 1972-1997. He then went on to work for the State of Michigan until 2003, according to his online obituary.

You may remember Butterfield II was shot during a traffic stop last fall. His shooter, Eric Knysz, was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He hanged himself in his prison cell, and later died.
