Five WWII veterans honored just days before Memorial Day

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP (WJRT) - (05/20/14) - With Memorial Day and the seventieth anniversary of D-Day just around the corner, a Saginaw Township club is taking time to honor their World War II veterans.

The Fordney Club presented awards to five of their surviving WWII vets Tuesday evening.

They say it's important to remember their service and why they're considered the greatest generation.

One of the men honored was Ralph Wolpert. He served as a mechanic in the aviation department with the U.S. Marines.

He says he doesn't feel any more special than his fellow WWII brothers.

"We did our job, came home and enjoyed what freedom we got. That's the repayment we had for our time in the service," he said.

The Fordney Club says Ralph is one of the oldest - if not the oldest member - of their club.
