Heavy rains, slow drainage causes flooding in Clayton Township

Posted: Updated:
(05/21/14) - Frustration over flooding has some Clayton Township residents asking for help - again.

There's a low spot at the corner of McEnrue and Van Vleet - not far from Bristol. The water was high, Wednesday morning, following heavy rain overnight.

"This is their front yard," said Bill Miller. "There's grass under there."

Under all of the water.

Miller says it was worse earlier in the day. It's his daughter's property.

"She couldn't drive out, so I picked her up this morning to go to work," he said. "It's not a safe situation for people that travel this road," he said.

At least one neighbor had water in his home.

"The water gets so high, it goes in through his basement windows," Miller said.

Kerry Evans lives across the street. His backyard is flooded.

"It's got a lot of water in it and it's going to take four or five days before I can get back there to even mow again," Evans said.

Evans said he sees something like this about every two years.

Miller said his daughter has dealt with this kind of flooding at least three times in the four years they've lived at the corner of McEnrue and Van Vleet.

"The ditches on this side are all filled in with brush and grass and weeds. We need some help from our county," he said.

Genesee County Deputy Drain Commissioner Jim Gerth said this most recent report hasn't been looked into yet, but one from April was checked out.

Gerth said the issue seems to be how best to get the water to the county drain. There seems to be some private and natural drainage problems. The county hasn't done a survey out there yet and is still determining what the best options are, according to Gerth.
