FLINT (WJRT) -
(05/21/14) - After a brief delay, the countdown is back on - The Flint Farmer's Market is getting ready to move into its new home downtown. Doors are scheduled to open Saturday morning, June 21.
"One month. We've been waiting so long. We've been getting ready for the last year, and we just can't wait," said Karianne Martus, of the Flint Farmer's Market.
Renovations continue at a rapid pace inside the Flint Journal's old printing press building. The electricity and plumbing are in - painting and flooring are next - and vendors are already beginning to spruce up their stalls.
"We've got all the vendors spaces back there, we've got the community kitchens over there, the wine shop, the Dort Federal Demonstration Kitchen, the community room, we've got our outside patio. Almost ready to go," Martus said.
The market's atrium area is almost ready to go as well.
"This is going to be like our town square, kind of like our activity center. We'll have places for people to come and eat, hang out, and they can look out at the beautiful Wilson Park, and they can see views of the whole market, so this is really an exciting place for everyone to come together," Martus said.
One of the features upstairs is right outside. We're talking outdoor seating, rentable space and an incredible view of the entire downtown area.
"All of the outdoor activities, the outdoor pavilion. It's going to bring everyone downtown. It's going to be a game changer," Martus said.
As for the parking lot, "They're grating and paving and getting ready. We're going to have almost 350 spaces right here. Great spaces. No potholes. They won't ruin your tires like our old market," Martus said.
With only one month to go, big plans are coming together for opening day.
"We've got a mariachi band, we've got some country line dancers, Tapology, a ribbon cutting, a photo booth, face painters. We've got everything but a three ring circus going on. It's going to be great fun," Martus said.
