Anthony Bennett sentenced to 40 years for killing 4 year old boy

BAY CITY (WJRT) - (05/22/14) - A tearful ending to a trial that put this man behind bars for brutally killing his girlfriend's four-year-old son.

Anthony Bennett was in federal court Thursday and was sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing Carnel Chamberlain.

The little boy's remains were found under his mother's porch on the Saginaw Chippewa Reservation in Isabella County in 2012.

Bennett won't see the light of day until he is 62-years-old. For what he did, Carnel's family says he should be locked away forever.

"This was a heinous crime against a young child," said Carnel's cousin Culver Judson.

The details of the case are gruesome. In June 2012, Bennett was supposed to be baby-sitting Carnel, but he went missing and the community searched for a week.

"I wish there was more justice," said LeAna Sams, Carnel's grandma.

Investigators found what was left of his little body burned under his mother's front porch.

Bennett plead guilty.

"I couldn't see them giving him anything less than life in prison," Judson said.

Bennett's attorney asked for 35 years - the minimum in his plea agreement.

The judge said he's an 'unusually dangerous man' and locked him up for the maximum, 40 years. Bennett spoke up in court Thursday, saying he's sorry for the victim's family. For them, sorry isn't enough to bring back carnel.

"I just love him and I miss him and I'll have him in my heart and my soul forever," Sams said.

"May God have mercy on your soul, it was senseless what you did and you'll get what you deserve in the end," Judson said.

Anthony Bennett's family was at the sentencing. They did not want to comment.
