Community members prepare for Light up the City

Posted: Updated:
FLINT (WJRT) - (05/22/14) - People in Flint and law enforcement are hoping to curb crime in the city by lighting up the night.

Volunteers will be going door to door, encouraging people to turn on their porch lights to help fight crime.

Light Up The City's goal is a simple one - make the Flint community safer.

To achieve it, community members are teaming up with police and corporate sponsors including Consumers Energy and  Wal-mart.

They've spent the past few days going door to door in the Pemberton Drive area, passing out light bulbs and getting a message across: it's up to everybody to fight crime.

Light up the City is targeting that area because crime is all too frequent there.

One feature of the campaign asks people to turn their porch lights on to keep the criminals away.

The walk also helps strengthen relationships between police and the neighborhood.

Tuesday's walk and parade kicked off at 6:30 at the River Park Community Center on Pemberton Drive in Flint.
