Flint, MSP fire investigators and Genesee County prosecutors honored in Bay City

BAY CITY (WJRT) - (05/22/14) - Five Mid-Michigan investigators have been honored for helping to catch a man now serving time for setting fire to a Flint retirement village.

Flint Police Sergeant David Bigelow, Michigan State Police Specialist Sergeant Lenny Jaskulka and private investigator Mark Simpson were named arson investigators of the year.

Genesee County Assistant Prosecutors Gladys Christopherson and Karen Hanson were recognized as prosecutors of the year.

Their work helped to catch Matthew Jones - a former security guard at Rosehaven Manor in Flint.

Investigators say, back in 2012, Jones set fire to the complex to cover up a number of thefts.

"We're honored. We love what we do and we don't expect recognition, but when they recognize us and our own board members recognize us, we just feel great about it," Bigelow said.

The Michigan chapter of the National Association of Arson Investigators passed out the awards Thursday night in Bay City.
