Sheriff departments offer boat safety reminders

Posted: Updated:
HURON COUNTY (WJRT) - (05/24/14) - The Huron County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan Sheriffs' Association wants you to stay safe on the water this summer.

They are asking you to do a vessel safety check, similar to what you would do for your car.

The sheriff's office says start with your life jackets. It's Michigan law that you have one for every person on board. They need to properly fit and be in good condition. You should check for discoloration, dry rot and mildew, popped seams and tears in the fabric. The sheriff's office also suggests making sure the buckles and zippers work.

A vessel check should also include a look at things like your visual distress signals, sound producing devices, navigation lights, bilge pumps, ventilation blowers and fire extinguishers.

The sheriff also says you should make sure navigation charts or devices are updated.

The Huron County sheriff says many departments offer free vessel safety checks. All your local department for more information.
